Town
Quiet farming town with a Spanish-era church, an 1800s cemetery and the Luis Taruc Hukbalahap monument.
San Luis is a municipality of 17 barangays with about 59,000 residents at the 2020 census. Augustinian missionaries founded it in 1742, and it was once called San Nicolas de Cabagsac.
The town's church honors its patron, Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, whose feast is on June 21. A fishnet hangs high above the altar to catch roosting bats, and an old cemetery behind the church has tombstones from the 1800s.
San Luis is also home to the Luis M. Taruc Hukbalahap Monument, honoring the leader of the World War II resistance movement who also fought for farmers' and workers' rights.
Luis Taruc (1913 to 2005) founded and led the Hukbalahap, which resisted the Japanese occupation during World War II. A monument to him stands in San Luis.
