Gumain River: from lahar to a river worth an award
How the Gumain River, buried by Pinatubo's lahar in 1991, became the Palakol Summer Place and an award nominee.

The Gumain River runs out of the mountains on Floridablanca's north-eastern side. After Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991, it filled with lahar that wrecked roads and hurt the local economy.
A bridge built on lahar
The answer was engineering. The Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway crosses the river on the tall Gumain Bridge, built high enough to stay safe from future lahar flows. The municipality notes that some 70 million cubic metres of lahar were used as foundation and fill for the structure.
The river comes back
Under that bridge, the river is now the town's favourite swimming spot, the Palakol Summer Place. Upstream the water pools between the banks, and families rent huts for the day.
In 2026 the DENR office in Pampanga nominated the river, which locals call the Palakol River, for its R.I.V.E.R.s for Life award, recognising the rehabilitation work of the town and its partners. The tourism office led a clean-up with the DENR and the Coast Guard ahead of the validation.
Still a mountain river
The river can still turn. In August 2026, monsoon floods swept away about 300 huts, most owned by indigenous families who rent them out. The site reopened in September, and the town now closes it whenever the water runs high.
