Overview
The Candaba Swamp covers about 32,000 hectares of ponds, marshes and seasonally flooded grassland across Pampanga and Bulacan. It fills completely in the wet season, acting as a natural flood basin for the Pampanga River, and from about November to April locals farm it for watermelon and rice.
Migratory ducks and other birds use the swamp every year; a 24-hour count in January 2008 recorded 17,000 birds, a Philippine record.
