A day down the Apalit-Macabebe-Masantol road: two parish churches, two markets and the delta's fishponds and waterways.

Masantol is almost surrounded by Macabebe and is reached through it, so the two make a natural pair.

Morning: Macabebe

Leave MacArthur Highway at Apalit and follow the two-lane road south. Stop at San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church on the plaza, then browse the stalls of the Macabebe Public Market.

Lunch

Have lomi and halo-halo at Ace Kitchenette.

Afternoon: Masantol

Continue south to Masantol. Its church, Saint Michael the Archangel Parish, was built in 1932 in a Renaissance style, with a facade said to resemble a trident. The Masantol Public Market is in Santo Niño, and buses to Cubao leave from the area.

Look out across the fishponds on the way: from above, the roads that double as dikes make the delta look like a web of canals.
