Most visitors know Angeles for Clark and nightlife, but its old core, Barangay Santo Rosario, is a compact heritage district best seen on foot.
The big church
Start at Pisamban Maragul, the Holy Rosary church, built from 1877 to 1896 with forced labour under the Spanish polo y servicio and used as a US Army hospital in 1899 and 1900.
Across the street
The Museo ning Angeles, the 1922 former town hall, opens Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Nearby, the Center for Kapampangan Studies at Holy Angel University has exhibits on Kapampangan history, and the university's Chapel of the Holy Guardian Angel keeps an 1830 image of the city's patron.
The founders
Walk down Santo Rosario Street to the Founders' Residence of 1824, the oldest building in the city, and the 1840 granary that is now Camalig Restaurant, good for a pizza lunch. At Lakandula Street, Bale Herencia dates from 1860.
The mansion
Finish at Pamintuan Mansion, the Museum of Philippine Social History, where Aguinaldo marked the first anniversary of independence in 1899. It opens from 8am to 4pm.
