San Fernando's first church, founded in 1754, was a modest wooden building with a thatched roof, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption.
Revolution
On October 9, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo reviewed the Philippine Revolutionary Army in front of it. A year later, as Filipino forces under General Antonio Luna fell back before the Americans, the church was burned.
Fire again
In the American period a neoclassical church rose in its place. In 1939 it burned again. The Kapampangan architect Fernando Ocampo rebuilt it in 1948, and the building was restored once more in 2014.
Today
It is now the Metropolitan Cathedral, seat of the Archdiocese of San Fernando, facing City Hall at the head of the old heritage district. Visit the cathedral and walk on to Consunji Street.
