Angeles carries its founder's name. Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda and his wife, Doña Rosalia de Jesus, built their house on what is now Santo Rosario Street in 1824. It is the oldest building in the city, the Founders' Residence, and it passed to their only daughter, Doña Juana de Miranda de Henson.
A patron angel
In 1830 Don Angel commissioned an image of the Guardian Angel, patron of the town that would grow around his house. It is now kept in the Chapel of the Holy Guardian Angel at Holy Angel University.
Rice and stone
In 1840 Don Ciriaco de Miranda, the first gobernadorcillo, built a camalig, a grain storehouse, nearby. Restored in 1980 by Armando L. Nepomuceno, it now houses the Camalig restaurant.
Then came Clark
From the late 1890s, the American base at Fort Stotsenburg, later Clark Air Base, transformed the town. Walk the old core on our Santo Rosario heritage walk.
